I have an old pc and was thinking to convert it into a media centre. I know that I should add new hardware but this is a challenge for me. Do you think it is a good idea?

Well it really depends on how old you PC is and the specs it has!!
So if it is not that old . . .why not. . MEDIA CENTRE DOES not require much hardware!!

You will need some things for it at least:
Pentium III or better
Win 2003 or better
256MB RAM or better
I would say those are the basics

For me, most of my media data like mp3, movies, soundtrack, video..etc will store in dvd-rom. It's more easy when i need it. I will think of using my old system as a ftp server.

I would say those are the basics Yes! For a media center, you will need more high-end requirement. It's not a wise choice. Especially you will need a large hard drive.

Hmm.. Sounds cool. Maybe I could turn my old pc to media centre too. :D I already tried to sold it, no one wanted it. I was just gonna throw it away, but I think that I could transform it to something cool.. :D

Just upgrade better soundcard and video card, that's old pc will become more powerful as Media Centre.

You will also need a New Sound Blaster Card and atleast maybe a 50 GB hard drive.

yes..apart from the upgrading of your hard drive you will also be needing to get a nice sound system too as without that there would be no good sound output..
