I think I do the same as Necromancer. Most of the time, my problem was already solved 2-3 times somewhere so I just go and read how to repair my stuff. It is easier though to post directly on a forum, act like a noob and wait for a guru to answer with a list of links to the places where you can find the answer that you're looking for.

Only serious problem I have had with my pc was when I fu**ed up the e.xe files because someone told me to put few things to cmd.. :D
It changed .exes to .txt's :D I was able to solve it by running a .reg-file.

I also love to diagnose myself and check it again before i asking my friends or find at net. If its really hard to solve, my last way go to find techinician to help me. If they want to format. I will do that myself.

For hardware problem, i will change one part per part to test which hardware cause the problem.
When come to software, i will use some sort of FIX IT program to diagnosis the problem and use appropriate program to fix it. I do looking for the answer from Microsoft Help section.

tech forums like these can save you a tonne of money in tghe long run. Ask here and on other tech forums and give as much information as possible about the problem, what you were doing, the system you are running on etc.
